Magic beat Spurs

By DHCMan | December 19, 2008

Jameer Nelson scored 24 points, and Dwight Howard had 14 points and 13 rebounds to help the host Orlando Magic win for the seventh time in eight games, 90-78 over the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night.

Howard picked up his fifth foul halfway into the fourth quarter and went to the bench. That wasn’t anything new for the Magic, who played the last two games with the All-Star center sidelined by a sore knee.

Rashard Lewis finished with 15 points, and Hedo Turkoglu had 11. The Magic improved to 20-6 to open a 4 1/2-game lead over second-place Atlanta in the Southeast Division.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 19 points.

The Spurs, down by 23 in the third quarter, used a 13-4 run to draw within six in the fourth quarter, but Nelson hit back-to-back baskets to give the Magic a cushion. Nelson scored 21 of his points in the second half.

The Magic will continue their bid for title-run credibility Saturday when they host the Los Angeles Lakers.

Noteworthy

JAZZ — Utah forward Carlos Boozer had a second MRI on a quadriceps tendon injury that has kept the All-Star out of 15 straight games. Boozer had the examination Thursday and results weren’t expected until today. He injured the tendon above his left knee Nov. 19 against Milwaukee.

On Wednesday night in New Jersey, Boozer told ESPN.com that he will definitely opt out of the final year of his contract.

GRIZZLIES — Memphis wived former All-Star Antoine Walker.

The 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward has not played this season. He was acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in June along with the draft rights to guard O.J. Mayo and guards Greg Buckner and Marko Jaric in exchange for the draft rights to forward Kevin Love, swingman Mike Miller, forward Brian Cardinal and center Jason Collins.

76ERS — Philadelphia forward Elton Brand will be sidelined for a month because of a dislocated shoulder.

WIZARDS — Washington forward Antawn Jamison has a strained left thumb and could miss today’s game against Philadelphia.

WARRIORS — Monta Ellis has been transferred from the suspended list to the inactive list by Golden State, which waived second-round draft pick Richard Hendrix to make room on its roster.

IVERSON TRADE — The biggest trade of the season is looking a bit lopsided so far.

Allen Iverson thought he was going to a championship contender when the Nuggets sent him to Detroit for Chauncey Billups. Six weeks after the blockbuster deal, it’s his former teammates in Denver who are enjoying a resurgence while his current team is struggling on many nights to fit him in.

With Billups at the helm, Denver is off to the best start in franchise history, spawning talk that the Nuggets could reach the conference championships and maybe challenge the Lakers for Western Conference supremacy.

The Pistons are playing around .500 ball, a team of aging veterans led by a rookie coach searching for answers now that he has The Answer. Most notably: Can a player of AI’s unique skill set fit into Detroit’s ultimate team concept?

The Nuggets unequivocally loved Iverson, who helped them win 50 games last season for the first time in 20 years despite playing with a broken finger on his shooting hand.

The Pistons absolutely adored Billups, who helped them win a title and led them to the conference finals six years in a row, the longest streak in the NBA since Magic Johnson’s Showtime Lakers of the 1980s.

But it was a deal neither team could resist.

“We had what they needed and they had what we needed,” Nuggets executive Mark Warkentien said.

Magic hanging in..

By DHCMan | December 4, 2008

For the Orlando Magic, losing their top three guards to injury has been a blessing in disguise.

Without their starting backcourt of Mickael Pietrus and Jameer Nelson, and top sub Keith Bogans, for more than a week, the Magic have not only survived, but prospered.

Rookie Courtney Lee has emerged as a potential go-to player, and 12th-year veteran Anthony Johnson has proven to be a dependable custodian at point guard.

“Everybody said we were overstacked at the shooting guard position, but it was exactly what we needed,” Bogans said. “If they didn’t have confidence in us, they would have traded some of us.”

The Magic have a strong front line, with All-Star center Dwight Howard, sharpshooter Rashard Lewis and point forward Hedo Turkoglu each scoring at least 22 points in a mid-week win over Minnesota that improved the Southeast Division-leading Magic’s record to 14-5.

Their backcourt, though hobbled, has filled in the gaps.

Turkoglu and Johnson have taken over the point responsibilities for the Magic, who’ve won two of three games with their depleted lineup and look to feast on Oklahoma City, last in the Northwest Division, on Friday.

The injuries have allowed the Magic to see how players like Lee will perform given playing time.

Lee, their first-round pick out of Western Kentucky, scored a season-high 19 points in the win against the Timberwolves and showed signs that—in time—he could be a dependable option in a deep backcourt

“He’s hardheaded and it’s a long season,” Johnson said “I try to teach patience. I told him sometimes you’re going to be the eighth-, ninth-best guy on the court. Just be patient and take advantage of it when you can.”

Said Lee: “The guys tell me something different every day. But (patience) is what they keep stressing.”

Lee, who played sparingly early in the season, showed his shooting range and his ability to drive against Minnesota.

“It’s good to see him play with confidence,” general manager Otis Smith said. “Those are the things he can do. There are gonna be up moments and down moments.”

Coach Stan Van Gundy said that Lee, “a humble guy,” is “gaining confidence that he can play at this level. That means he’ll be aggressive, and when he’s aggressive he’s really good.”

Starting shooting guard Pietrus remains sidelined for at least three weeks with a torn thumb ligament. J.J. Redick has started in his place, but has struggled.

In his last three games as a starter, Redick has shot six of 18 from the field, including three of 13 from 3-point range, and has only averaged just five points a game.

“We’re not going to those guys a lot,” Van Gundy said in explaining Reddick’s offensive stats. “They’re getting the ball to the other guys, and that’s their job.”

Despite the solid backcourt play, Smith said the Magic haven’t ruled out making a roster move. Guard Mike Wilks is still on the roster even though he’s out for the season with torn knee ligaments.

Orlando’s backcourt lacks size. Pietrus, at 6-6, is the only guard taller than 6-5.

“We didn’t have a lot of injuries in the past few years, so we didn’t get to see what our young guys can do,” Smith said. “If you’re going to have injuries in this league, it’s best to have them early.”

The good news for the Magic is that Nelson, who missed four games with a strained hip flexor, said he expects to return to the lineup Friday against Oklahoma City. Bogans was cleared to play Wednesday against Minnesota, but did not see action.

Van Gundy said he would use Thursday’s practice and Friday’s shootaround to see how effective Bogans could be against the Thunder.

DHow to defend slam dunk crown

By DHCMan | November 16, 2008

Let’s count the ways that this is a good day.

First, I just traded David Lee for Travis Outlaw in my fantasy basketball league. I wasn’t happy about having to throw in free bone spurs to make the deal happen, but whatever — I’m delighted to add another Blazer to my virtual locker room.

Second, I had a chocolate dip donut from Tim Horton’s. Man, so good.

And third, Magic center Dwight Howard, fresh off his first (and rare) triple-double, said Wednesday he has every intention to defend his slam-dunk title in February during All-Star Weekend in Phoenix. Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel reports:

“‘I thought about that [Wednesday], actually,’ Howard said. ‘Trying to think about what dunks I can do.’ [...] Howard said he’ll have a new Web site up and running within the next few days, and on it he will ask fans to suggest dunks he can perform. ‘I think that will be really cool,’ he said.”

Dime asks the obvious question — and I’ll pose the same one to you — “What dunks would you suggest Superman try this second time around?”

Personally, I’m hoping for more comics-inspired theatrics, but with a villain twist. Like maybe something to do with the “Brotherhood of Evil Mutants”. That’d make the Adidas family happy, right?

DHow with triple double

By DHCMan | November 16, 2008

Even after his latest feat made his nickname a little outdated, Dwight Howard doesn’t mind if people still call him “The Daily Double.”

Howard recorded his first career triple-double with 30 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocks Wednesday night and the Orlando Magic beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 109-92. It was the first time a player had at least 30 points and 10 blocks in a game since Hakeem Olajuwon had 31 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocks against Dallas on April 13, 1996, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

“I wish he would have had one more rebound. It would have looked really even on the stat sheet—30, 20 and 10,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “You can’t dominate a game much more than that.”

Howard had a double-double and matched his previous career best of seven blocks in the first half as Orlando raced to a 71-42 lead. He then scored the Magic’s first nine points after halftime to stretch the lead to 32.

After that, the only drama was whether Howard would get his 10th block.
